Beyond Storytelling 101

Have you been telling stories for some time already and wondered how you can improve your storytelling skills? If yes, then Beyond Storytelling 101 is for you! Beyond Storytelling 101 aims to enhance participants’ ability to adapt stories for telling and to hone their delivery skills over 12 hours of coaching.

Facilitator: Verena Tay of MoonShadow Stories

Areas Covered:

  • How to choose and adapt stories for performance
  • Telling for children vs. telling for adults
  • Vocal skills: speech clarity, projection, expressiveness
  • Presentation skills: awareness of body language, use of gestures, working with props/visual aids
  • Rehearsal skills: regarding different methods of preparation
  • Performance skills: physical & vocal warm-ups, how to overcome nerves, coping with gaffes

Duration: Four 3-hour sessions

Dates: Mon 31st April; Tue 1st, & Fri 4th & Tue 8 May 2012 (7 to 10 pm)

Venue: At a condominium near Newton along Bukit Timah Road

No of Participants: 6 minimum, 8 maximum

Cost: $320/person

Prerequisites: This is NOT a workshop for beginners. This workshop is geared for participants who have been telling stories actively for some time and wish to improve their telling skills.

The Partisan Teller: Storytelling in the First Person

Storytellers often tell from the point of view of the omniscient narrator, and prefer not to enter the realm of telling their chosen story in the first person. If you wish to broaden your storytelling repertoire and techniques, let experienced storytelling coach and playwright Verena Tay share with you practical tips on how to change your storytelling perspective, infuse suspense in your style and bring your story to life.

  • Plan and develop your chosen story from the first person perspective.
  • Rehearse and tell your story in the first person.

Duration: One 3-hour session: Sat 19 May 2012 (10 am to 1 pm)

Prerequisites:

  • Open to experienced storytellers in English who wish to improve their storytelling.
  • Please come dressed in loose, comfortable clothing so that you will not feel constricted while doing the various physical activities.
  • Please bring at least 2 stories that you would like to improve your ability to tell.

An Introduction to Storytelling

A 9-hour workshop conducted by Storywise

If you are interested in storytelling, but don’t know where to start, this is the workshop for you. This nine-hour workshop (over two Saturdays) will give complete beginners a firm grounding in storytelling skills.  This workshop is for anyone interested in learning to tell stories: whether at work or at home, to adults or children, just for fun, or as a step towards telling professionally.

You will receive step-by-step guidance in:

  • understanding story structure
  • discovering you  natural storytelling style
  • understanding the elements of vocal expression
  • learning to tell a story without memorisation
  • adding details to make the story uniquely yours
  • rehearsal and performance techniques

 Getting young children to participate in the stories you tell them, harnesses their energy (energy that might otherwise have gone into wiggles and giggles) and uses it to engage them on a multi-sensory level. In this highly practical 3-hour workshop you will discover how to manage audience participation and how you can add it to almost any story.

Practical Magic: Prop Stories for Young Children

A 3-hour workshop conducted by Storywise

There are many ways of telling stories, and using objects while telling is one of the most enjoyable, for both the teller and the audience. In this very practical 3-hour workshop, you will be introduced to a number of stories that are enhanced by the use of objects. These may include: string stories, drawing stories, paper folding or tearing stories, handkerchief stories and sand stories. This workshop is suitable for anyone who wants to tell stories to young children.
