FEAST – The Federation of Asian Storytellers https://storytellingsingapore.com/feast-the-federation-of-asian-storytellers/ Wed, 17 Oct 2018 04:09:17 +0000 http://storytellingsingapore.com/?p=5590 feast post

The Federation of Asian Storytellers was set up by a group of experienced storytellers with a vision of promoting the art of storytelling in Asia.  Through the work of the Federation, more opportunities could be created for tellers to perform, internationally and inter-culturally, by organising Festivals, performances and teller exchanges.

The inaugural FEAST Storytellers’ Conference will be held in Singapore on Friday 23 and Saturday 24 November 2018 in conjunction with the 398.2 Storytelling Festival 25 November 2018.

Apart from a keynote and workshops by Dr. Margaret Read MacDonald, the Conference will feature nine workshops by some of Asia’s leading storytelling practitioners, including Dr Wajuppa Tossa, Ariyo Faridh Zidni, Sheila Wee, Jeeva Raghunath, Alicia Dongjoo Bang and Ng Kok Keong, as well as Christine Carlton (Australia), Craig Jenkins (UK) and Giovanna Conforto (Italy).

The Conference will be an excellent opportunity to meet like-minded practitioners from the region, and for all those keen to perform and travel, it offers delegates the chance to meet (and even perform before) representatives from Asian storytelling festivals, including Bangalore, Bangkok, Chennai, Jakarta, Kuching, Penang, Seoul and Singapore.

The 398.2 Storytelling Festival, which takes place on the day after the conference, presents the best of Singapore’s thriving story community and many storytellers from across Asia and beyond, in a day-long celebration at the National Library.

Workshop (1)  Telling Through Translation by Dr. Margaret Read Macdonald

Our marvelous contemporary world allows us to travel the globe telling stories. It brings friends who speak many languages to our own hometowns. We need not hesitate to share our stories with audiences who do not speak our language. But we do need 2 things: a bilingual friend who will translate for us … and a technique for facilitating translation

In this workshop for experienced storytellers, Margaret Read MacDonald will expand on her handbook Tell the World: Storytelling Across Language Barriers to teach techniques for sharing a story via a translator. She will demonstrate the techniques and facilitate the participants in practising the techniques.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS WORKSHOP IS FOR STORYTELLERS WITH SOME EXPERIENCE. For a beginners workshop by Dr Margaret Read Macdonald please see below ‘Playing With Stories’ which will be held from 2pm to 5.30pm on the same day, at the same venue.
