Verena Tay (www.verenatay.com) is accomplished at telling stories performatively and in a written format.

As an oral storyteller, Verena has delighted audiences in Singapore, Scandinavia, Australia, the US, Wales and Malaysia with her unique way of bringing stories vocally and physically alive. A founding member of MoonShadow Stories and the Storytelling Association (Singapore) as well as a past president of SAS, she is driven to make traditional myths/tales/legends relevant for people today. She has also successfully coached adults to improve their storytelling craft through various courses, particularly her intermediate level workshop, Beyond Storytelling 101.

As a voice, speech and presentation skills facilitator, she possesses an MA in Voice Studies (Central School of Speech and Drama) and has taught at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, National University of Singapore, LaSalle College of the Arts, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and other institutions in Singapore.

As a theatre practitioner for over twenty-five years, Verena acted, directed and wrote for local English language theatre. She created various solo and collaborative performances, often based on original material, while as an Associate Artist with The Substation (2002–09). To date, four collections of her plays have been published: In the Company of Women (2004), In the Company of Heroes (20110, Victimology (2011) and The Car and Other Plays (2016).

As a writer, Verena has published two short story collections: Spectre (2012) and Spaces (2016). She has edited twelve volumes of short stories, including the popular Balik Kampung series published by Math Paper Press. An Honorary Fellow at the International Writing Program, University of Iowa (Aug–Nov 2007), she was a Writer-in-Residence at Nanyang Technological University (Aug–Nov 2018). In addition, she has conducted creative writing workshops for Singapore Book Council, National Library Board, Ministry of Education, The Arts House and other institutions. She also possesses an MA in English Literature (National University of Singapore) and an MFA in Creative Writing (City University of Hong Kong). Currently, she is writing her first novel as part of her Ph.D. studies in Creative Writing with Swansea University.
