HELEN TAN
Helen’s love for speech and drama was cultivated in school, having taken part in poetry competitions and performing in several drama productions. Later on, as a school teacher in the primary and secondary schools, as well as a Sunday School teacher, she used her skills in storytelling to make Literature and Bible stories come alive.
A professional member of the Storytelling Association of Singapore, Helen has a Masters in Counselling and a Specialist Diploma in Counselling. She spent 42 years in Education and she is currently a school counsellor. In her counselling sessions, she uses stories to heal, inspire and motivate her clients.
As a professional storyteller, Helen has performed at ticketed events organised by Story Weavers and the Singapore International Storytelling Festival. She has also told stories at school assemblies and to children and adults at the Botanic Gardens, MRT Train and Peranakan Museum.
Helen has conducted storytelling workshops for primary and secondary school students. She has also conducted workshops on the use of storytelling in the classroom for teachers of primary schools, secondary schools and student care centres. She has conducted reading workshops for parents to encourage them to read to their children, for the Society for Reading and Literacy.
