Improv for Storytellers Workshop

Improv, or improvisation, is an art form that’s gaining popularity onscreen, from TV shows such as Whose Line Is It Anyway? and Saturday Night Live stars like  Amy Poehler and Tina Fey. Now, The Improv Company is proud to bring our very own Improv for Storytellers workshop to the Storytelling Association (Singapore). Learn the basics of improvisation and try your hand at making stories up on-the-spot without any prior preparation! We’ll cover content like basic story structure, techniques to conjure compelling and complex characters/ personas in an instant, as well as how to use your body/physicality in effective storytelling. Most importantly though, through practical games and exercises, you will also experience the fundamentals of the improvisational mindset and how it will allow you to stay present and unfazed under pressure, to find connections between ideas and people in the moment, and to rapidly and creatively adapt to unexpected situations. And of course, you can definitely expect to have lots of crazy fun along the way!

Kim Tan is the Artistic Director and Co-founder of The Improv Company, Singapore’s most established improv training school. Kim has been improvising for more than 8 years and is an NIE-NAC accredited trainer with a B.A. (Political Science and Theatre Studies) from the National University of Singapore. He first fell in love with improv when he was in the UK and has since travelled internationally to give and attend lectures in his role as a Board Member of the global Applied Improvisation Network. Now he designs – and executes – the curriculum for all of The Improv Company’s public classes (Improv 101-501) and corporate workshops. He leads trainers in large-scale corporate projects, running improv-based workshops for clients like Singapore’s Ministry of Education, NBCUniversal, Facebook, BNP Paribas, InterContinental Hotels Group and TripAdvisor. As the Artistic Director of The Improv Company, Kim also oversees the production and direction of all of the Company’s performances.
